How can you be sure it could be a seenager?
Almost all of us in the 50s/60s/70s grew up hearing that we - the Portuguese people - are quiet, with little tendency to make a big fuss about defending our rights, with a certain shyness in showing off successes around money, little entrepreneurial streak and a great spirit of acceptance in a life of little luxury.
And how much things have changed... Look at the climate of demonstrations, the number of startups and adventurous leaps by our recent graduates abroad, the complex low level of average savings (except for the Covid era when we were stuck at home...), very much associated with the "we'll see what happens later" spirit ...
But the "we'll see what happens later" can be very expensive and above all cause great discomfort in our future life, which today is much longer...

Insurance is not only an excellent and stable instrument to discipline a saving with a view to the future, but there are several modalities that protect and complement assets in the face of unpleasant misfortunes: how many people have been saved from dying of cancer because they had insurance that allowed them to start earlier treatments, for example.
In the first case - disciplining a saving - it is important to take an hour out of your present to look ahead to your future. If you live off work and your current reserves or expected inheritances aren't very comfortable, it's worth doing some quick maths:
- Retirement close to 67 (and likely to increase due to the ageing population...)
- You have already acceded to retirement amount simulator on the site of direct social security? It's very simple and if you register on the site (it's convenient), you will already find there all the amounts you have paid in, year by year: consult here.
- From 67 to almost 81 life expectancy, we're talking 13 years; but how many of us won't make it past 90, that is, we live more than 20 years after the moment of reform? The capital you have accumulated so far, less what you want to leave to your heirs*, added to the value of the retirement you are entitled to, results in a monthly sum that allows you to enjoy that "silver age" with the comfort and freedom you dream of?
*capital to their heirs that may be leveraged by personal accident and life insurance
So that you don't have to over-limit yourself in the last years of your life, or gain unnecessary anxiety when thinking about the future, it's worth doing this maths and planning for retirement savings, all the more so if you're already less than 20 years into employment. A delivery plan for a financial insurance with guaranteed capital and a standalone fund that is independent of the health of the insurer, can be a great and reassuring solution. Start by doing the maths on 10% of your net income per month, and see the impact on your monthly availabilities in retirement.
But the future has to be faced even more squarely and we have to "paint" it with some clouds that may be dark grey, especially for the health-related adversities.
Here are some important statistics that call us back to the reality of what individual prevention and protection should be:
- 35% of the Portuguese population suffer from chronic diseases limiting their activity, and above 65 years of age, the incidence is 61% (Source: INE 2021)
- Stroke is one of the most limiting manifestations and the leading cause of death; every hour, 3 Portuguese suffer a stroke, one of them fatal
- Cancer, showed 58,000 new cases in 2020 and caused 30,000 deaths
- Dementias, especially Alzheimer's, appear mostly after retirement age and have had an exponential growth, affecting today 205,000 Portuguese (about 2% of the population has Alzheimer's); it is estimated to grow to more than 50% in 15 years.
