Travel and insurance

We are back to travel and the planet is very excited, whether for leisure or for work with the return of the congresses and international fairs that boost business. So let's bring some important notions about travel insurance.

Travel Insurance is a Personal Accident Insurance subtypeAccidents - provided they are not excluded - whether occurring in a professional and/or extra-professional context, anywhere in the world.

What coverages do they contemplate?

Death or Permanent Disability by Accident*, Accident Treatment Expenses* - three coverages always present in Personal Accident policies - and several that accompany specific needs of a trip (some usually optional, with added cost (a)), such as:

- Travel consultation, Trip cancellation or interruption (a), Expenses for delay by carrier (a), Medical expenses abroad due to illness (important the extension to pandemic diseases), Travel assistance **, Repatriation expenses, Evacuation for political reasons or natural phenomena (a), Loss, delay or damage to Accompanied Luggage (a) and/or Unaccompanied Luggage, Third Party Liability (a) (damage caused to third parties), with capital and limitations specified by each product/insurer. One of the most common limitations is countries in declared war, the use of two-wheeled vehicles or non-commercial aircraft, acts of terrorism, natural cataclysms such as earthquakes and tsunamis, as well as adventure sports, but which may be subject to inclusion with increased cost and/or negotiation on a case-by-case basis.

For example, there are packages for ski trips that even include reimbursement in case of cancellation due to lack or excess of snow at the destination and charges for equipment hire, "forfaits" and unused lessons in case of accident.

In the case of business trips, it may make sense to include covers such as Transport of a Replacement Professional, or Urgent Dispatch of Professional Equipment, as well as Access to Video Medical Consultations, in the case of countries with less medical assistance cover, for example.

*ACCIDENT - Sudden, external and unforeseeable event for the Insured Person and the Beneficiary, which causes bodily injury, permanent disability, temporary incapacity or death to the Insured Person, medically verified, immediately after the accident or up to 2 years after the date of its occurrence.

**TRAVEL ASSISTANCE - There are more or less extensive and sophisticated travel assistance packages, and more and more insurers are offering something that provides tangible support: in addition to the usual 24-hour helpline, an app that allows direct contact with the various services contracted and even alerts from the civil protection service in the region where we are (in the event of forest fires or natural disasters, etc.)

Multiple personal accident/travel insurance? does it make sense?

The death and disability indemnities are complementary, i.e. the capital sums in the event of a claim are cumulative between the various personal accident, life and travel policies.

Companies:

The Particular Case of business travel and expatriate employees:

The protection and safety of employees on business trips or expatriates is a basic priority within corporate social responsibility and the Duty of Care. Good practice establishes the need for the company to prepare a risk assessment and prior planning before the start of the trip, the obligation for employees to receive all necessary information and the assurance of safety in the event of a dangerous situation or serious risk.

Among the main occupational risks to be taken into account for posted workers are contagion or infection due to poor sanitary conditions, violence and civil insecurity in the destination, accidents related to road safety, extreme weather events and/or natural disasters.

For business trips or short stays, business travel insurance with health care supplements can ensure that the Employee is adequately protected against any accident or unforeseen event.

For longer trips, in addition to having to communicate the territorial extension to the insurer of the occupational injury policy, health insurance solutions that cover all health costs during the stay abroad, from tele-assistance and rapid reimbursement of expenses to mental health treatment or preventive medicine, can make sense. These health insurance policies can be complemented by an international expatriate risk plan that includes life insurance, accident insurance and supplementary disability benefits.

Travel insurance "continuous"/policies year and beyond?

For companies with several employees who travel very regularly, it may make sense to consider taking out this type of policy, which is characterised by:

  • Annual policy covering everyone in the company (and even subcontractors under certain conditions), with no need for trip-by-trip communication
  • Far fewer exclusions than standard travel policies
  • Trip cancellation covered
  • Directors' and officers' leisure travel is covered.

The Amplitude team is at your disposal to study the options that make most sense for each situation, travelling to all latitudes. Have a good trip!

Am I a beneficiary? On the death of a family member, how can potential beneficiaries find out if they are in fact a beneficiary (life insurance, personal accident insurance and capitalisation operations): ASF
